Cape Town EDITION Opens at the V&A: Inside the Hotel

The Cape Town EDITION opened at Quay 7 in October 2026. Here are the confirmed rooms, five food-and-drink venues, rooftop pool, location and booking details.

At a glance: The Cape Town EDITION opened at Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront on 27 October 2026. The 142-room hotel is the first EDITION property in Africa. Its official pages confirm five food-and-drink venues across three restaurants and two bars, a rooftop pool, spa, gym and event facilities. Reservations are available through Marriott.

Cape Town has welcomed another international hotel brand to the harbour, but the significance of The Cape Town EDITION is not simply its name on a new building. It is the African debut of a design-led hotel collection that puts restaurants, bars and public spaces at the centre of the guest experience. The property opened at Quay 7 on 27 October 2026, facing the V&A Waterfront’s superyacht marina and Table Mountain.

For travellers, the practical questions are now different from those raised during construction: what is actually open, what can visitors book, and which facilities are intended for hotel guests? Here is what the operator and the Waterfront have confirmed.

EDITION arrives in Cape Town

EDITION is Marriott International’s collection of individually designed luxury hotels. The brand’s model brings accommodation together with restaurants, bars, wellness and social spaces, while each property is shaped around its location. The Cape Town hotel is the brand’s first in Africa, a milestone Marriott described in its 27 October opening announcement.

The partnership was announced in December 2025 by Marriott International and V&A Waterfront Holdings. Their original agreement described a 2026 hotel and six planned private residences, with design by Shanghai-based Neri&Hu working with Cape Town practice StudioMAS. That announcement was a development plan; the opening announcement now confirms that the hotel itself is operating. The residences were part of the earlier project announcement, and the public hotel pages do not provide a separate completion or occupancy update for them.

Marriott operates, franchises and licenses accommodation across its portfolio, so it is useful to distinguish the global brand relationship from the property’s local development. The public announcement identifies Marriott International and V&A Waterfront Holdings as the parties behind the signed agreement. It does not set out the hotel’s detailed legal ownership structure. The hotel is marketed and bookable through Marriott’s channels.

Quay 7 on the V&A Waterfront

The hotel’s address is 7 East Pier Road, at Quay 7 on the Granger Bay side of the Waterfront. Its outlook takes in the harbour, the new superyacht marina, Table Mountain and the Atlantic. It sits within a large visitor precinct rather than a secluded resort: the Two Oceans Aquarium, Zeitz MOCAA, the Robben Island ferry terminal, shops, restaurants and public promenades are all within the wider Waterfront area.

That position suits visitors who want to combine a hotel stay with walking, dining and sightseeing without needing to drive for every outing. Cape Town International Airport is about 20.5 kilometres away according to Marriott’s current hotel information, although actual transfer time depends on traffic. The property does not list a hotel shuttle service. Confirm transfer arrangements directly with the hotel before travelling.

For an easy first outing, use our Cape Town weekend guide to plan around the Waterfront, then check the hotel’s current opening hours for any venue you intend to visit. The Waterfront’s broader public spaces remain distinct from hotel facilities: access to the property’s pool, spa and guest amenities should not be assumed for non-residents.

Rooms, suites and shared spaces

Marriott lists 142 guest rooms and suites, including 27 suites. Its opening release highlights two larger accommodations: a 240-square-metre Penthouse and a 112-square-metre Harbour Suite. The operator describes interiors with bespoke furniture, natural finishes, integrated joinery and large windows framing the surroundings. Rugs made by KwaZulu-Natal-based Shuttleworth Weaving bring one locally produced element into the room design.

The central public space is called The Drum: a tall cylindrical opening that brings daylight and sea air into the building. A spiral staircase leads to an outdoor viewing platform. Marriott presents the space as an arrival feature and a lookout, but visitors should check with the hotel about public access, operating hours and any event restrictions before planning a visit specifically to the platform.

Art and craft are part of the project’s Cape and African identity. Southern Guild curated the collection, which the operator says includes work by Zanele Muholi, Usha Seejarim and Chuma Maweni. Design Network Africa sourced objects from makers across the continent. These details are more useful than a generic claim of “local inspiration”: the hotel’s published descriptions name the people and works included in its spaces.

Five restaurants and bars: what the number means

The phrase “five restaurants” needs a small correction. Marriott’s current property page lists three restaurants and two bars. There are five named food-and-drink venues, but they are not all restaurants. The distinction matters when comparing hotel facilities or deciding where to book a meal.

  • Shale: The signature restaurant. Marriott describes a seasonal menu drawing on Cape farmers, coastal fisheries, winemakers and independent producers.
  • EAVE: A rooftop indoor-outdoor restaurant and bar beside the heated pool, with views and service that moves from afternoon into evening.
  • Pool Terrace: Poolside dining for breakfast, lighter daytime meals, sunset drinks and dinner service.
  • Lobby Bar: A ground-floor social space described as a Cape Town living room, with coffee, light food and drinks.
  • Punch Room: EDITION’s take on a traditional punch house, centred on drinks and a more intimate bar setting.

Executive Chef Phil Carmichael leads the food programme with South African beverage partner George Hunter. Marriott’s opening announcement names Saldanha Bay mussels with curry velouté as one example from Shale and describes a predominantly South African wine list. Menus, prices and service hours can change; consult the individual venue or hotel before making plans. The hotel’s own site currently promotes Shale, EAVE and its other venues.

Rooftop pool, spa and fitness

The rooftop pool is confirmed in the opening announcement and on Marriott’s live hotel page. EAVE and the Pool Terrace operate alongside it, creating a rooftop food-and-drink area as well as a swimming facility. Marriott describes the pool as heated. Access rules and pool hours are not a substitute for the hotel’s booking terms, so day visitors should ask whether any public access or day-use arrangement is available.

The property also lists a spa and fitness centre. Marriott describes a spa below sea level with treatment rooms, a couples’ suite, sauna and steam room in its opening material. The fitness centre is listed as available, while the Marriott page refers to a 24-hour gym and wellness programming. Specific treatments, class schedules and spa rates should be checked directly, as they are operational details that can change.

Architecture and Cape Town context

Neri&Hu designed the hotel with Cape Town-based architects and professional firms. The opening release says the architecture responds to Quay 7’s working-harbour history through a long, low form, pitched rooflines and a brick façade. More than six million bricks were laid by hand, according to Marriott. The building’s scale and materials refer to earlier warehouse structures, while its central Drum and rooftop spaces give the hotel a more contemporary profile.

The setting is changing too. The V&A’s December 2025 announcement positioned the hotel at the edge of the planned Granger Bay development, a multi-year programme expected to add homes, hotels, public space and a protected bay. The hotel’s opening is a completed project; the wider Granger Bay programme remains a longer-term development. It would be premature to describe all planned public amenities as complete just because the hotel is now open.

For Cape Town tourism, the immediate significance is clear and verifiable: a globally marketed luxury property has opened at a high-profile waterfront location and added new rooms, dining venues and event capacity. The V&A Waterfront’s CEO called it an expression of confidence in Cape Town as a tourism and investment destination. That is the developer’s stated view, not an independent measure of the hotel’s economic impact. Employment totals, visitor-spend effects and local procurement figures were not included in the public opening material reviewed for this guide.

Bookings, access and practical planning

Reservations are available on the official Marriott booking page. Choose dates there to see current room availability and rates; no fixed room price is meaningful without travel dates and room type. Marriott lists check-in at 15:00 and check-out at 12:00, complimentary on-site self-parking and valet parking for hotel guests, and no hotel shuttle service. Confirm all terms when booking because hotel policies may change.

Visitors going only for dinner should reserve directly with the venue and ask about parking, dress guidance and access. Hotel amenities such as the pool, spa and gym are not automatically open to restaurant guests.
